World Diabetes Day: Why Foot Health Matters

Diabetes and your feet: What's the connection and why does foot health matter on World Diabetes Day?

Diabetes affects the way your body processes sugar (glucose), but it also affects your circulation and nerves - especially in your feet! Over time, this can cause a condition called peripheral neuropathy, where sensation decreases, or peripheral arterial disease, where blood flow becomes restricted.

This means that small cuts, blisters, or pressure points can go unnoticed and take longer to heal, sometimes leading to infections or ulcers. The good news? Regular podiatry care can dramatically reduce these risks!

How Podiatry Supports Diabetes Management:

At Warrnambool Podiatry Group, we work alongside our clients and their healthcare teams to:

  • Conduct diabetic foot assessments to monitor circulation, nerve function, and skin integrity.

  • Provide preventive care - including nail and skin management, footwear advice, and offloading where needed.

  • Offer education so you know what to look for at home and when to seek help early.

  • Encourage holistic wellbeing - understanding that stress, movement, and nutrition all play a part in overall foot health.

Some simple steps for healthy feet if you have diabetes:

  • Check your feet daily - look for redness, cuts, swelling, or blisters.

  • Wear shoes that fit well and protect your feet.

  • Avoid walking barefoot.

  • Book regular podiatry check-ups - at least once a year, or more if advised by your healthcare team.

By working together - you, your podiatrist, and your healthcare team - we can help you stay active, healthy, and comfortable for years to come. If you have any concerns please be sure to book in with us so that we can help you!
